The recent Tokyo Auto Salon saw Toyota unveil one of its most exciting hatchbacks yet, with the sporty and thrilling new Toyota GR Yaris presented to an expectant crowd. The model - which was developed within a brand-new GR factory dedicated to the marque’s GR sports cars - was presented by Shigeki Tomoyama, Gazoo Racing Company President, who had much to say to support the launch of the vehicle.
Of particular note was Tomoyama’s focus on how the Gazoo Racing Company portfolio is being utilised to further the advancement of the brand’s on-road production sports cars. “We carried out the first part of this policy last year when we resurrected the GR Supra for the first time in 17 years. Just before we announced its return, a nearly normal prototype completed the Nürburgring 24 Hours, demonstrating the distinct superiority of its driving performance.”
The arrival of the GR Yaris came about through the company looking to develop a capable four-wheel drive sports car that could tackle the competitive nature of the World Rally Championship. However, after overcoming a series of challenges and a re-focusing of ambition, the GR Yaris would become a super hot hatch that would previously have been unthinkable of being developed by the marque.
“The GR Yaris will also show many of our customers how enjoyable driving can be,” added Tomoyama. “It is a car that will make them think, ‘With the Toyota GR Yaris, I want to drive along snow roads that I’ve never driven before, and I want to try my hand at rallying’. Indeed, there is no doubt that the GR Yaris will inspire in our customers the notion of ‘Fun To Drive Again’.”
The new Toyota GR Yaris is just the first step in the manufacturer’s GR line, with the company expected to continue its evolution and become one of the leaders in the racing industry.
