Am I eligible?
You need to be in receipt of one of these eligible benefits:

What is the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement?
This allowance is provided by Veterans UK. It is £64.15 per week (April 2015).
What is the Higher Rate Mobility Component?
This allowance is awarded by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). It is gradually being phased out, and PIP will replace it. The allowance amount is £57.45 per week (April 2015).
Who qualifies for the Higher Rate Mobility Component?
The DWP decides who qualified. The Higher Rate is awarded to children from the age of three up to 16, and you can apply for the Scheme on their behalf as a parent, carer or guardian. Children who claim DLA move to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) when they turn 16.
I have less than 12 months of allowance left – can I still apply?
No. However, should the DWP renew or extend your benefits for 12 months or more, you can then apply.
Can there be two Motability customers within one household?
Yes. There is no limit, assuming every person in the house individually meets the Motability criteria. Any non-Motability cars at the household have no effect on your eligibility.
Can any other allowances be used to apply for the Motability Scheme?
No. Only the four listed above are eligible.
Can I get a car through Hire Purchase?
No. The Motability Scheme uses Contract Hire agreements, Hire Purchase is not an option.
Will I get the Advance Payment back?
No. Your Advance Payment for a Motability car does not count as a deposit. It is not refundable.
How much does leasing through the Scheme cost?
Most or all of your eligible benefits will pay for your chosen vehicle. The actual amount payable will depend on the make and model, and whether an Advance Payment applies.
Will Motability help with the cost of a car or adaptations?
Motability does not aim to always provide financial aid. Rather, it works to help you find a solution you can afford at the best value. If you choose a specific car, and an alternative is available for less, you will typically not receive financial support for the more expensive model. In addition, Motability does not help finance any car which has already been ordered or delivered.
How do I apply for financial help and what is the process?
Call Motability Customer Services on 0300 456 4566 if you can't find a vehicle that matches your budget. The team will talk through your options, and if you qualify for aid you will be sent a finance application form. When this is returned, Motability will reply within 48 hours and give you a Case Manager to contact. This dedicated Case Manager will deal with your whole application.
You may be advised to consider a lease extension if financial help is not as suitable.
Will I be means tested for financial help?
In some cases, household income is used to assess your need for support. Your personal financial situation will also be taken into account.
Can I add my own money to top up any financial help I receive from Motability?
This is usually not possible, because your own funds could leave you ineligible for financial help. If you can show you have enough money to make such a contribution, Motability may disqualify you from claiming any other financial aid.
Are there any electric or 'green' vehicles on the Scheme?
Yes, some electric cars are available. Customers who will only make short journeys may benefit from choosing an electrically-powered model. If you select an electric car on the Scheme, you must have a home charging point fitted. This needs to be outside of your home, ideally in an off-road parking space such as your drive or garage. Select 'electric' under 'fuel type' when searching for Motability cars online.
Search results will also highlight 'green' cars, as the Scheme also aims to help cut down motoring impact on the environment.
Where can I see the average 'miles per gallon' (mpg) figure for a vehicle?
Online Motability search results will show the average mpg next to each car.
Are vehicles available with lumbar support?
Yes. Many manufacturers build their cars with a lumbar support aspect of the seat design as standard. Ask at the dealership when making your application.
How do I find the most suitable car?
We advise doing as much research as possible in advance. Read car reviews, look at various models online, and take a test drive to see how a car feels.
The test drive is one of the most important steps and we always recommend it, even if you will not be the main driver. Extended test drives for Motability customers are offered at most dealerships. Spend time making sure the seats are comfortable, that access is good, that the features you need are included and, ultimately, that you like the vehicle.
Which colours can I order a car in?
You’ll always have several options, which vary depending on the make and model. The dealership will be able to advise you on which colours are available.

How do I apply for the Motability Scheme and what do I need?
If you are eligible, just visit a dealership and speak to a Motability specialist there. They will take you through the entire application process, including submitting it online.
You must take your Certificate of Entitlement for benefits, a Driver Consent form and all named driver licences, and a recent utility bill when you go to apply. You will be sent a PIN to support your application, which you will need to input when you collect the car.
What is the Motability Suitability Questionnaire?
It is an important step in every Motability application. This questionnaire will show whether your choice of car – and the Scheme in general – are the best options for you. You may also need to arrange a home visit with the dealership to ensure you have space for a vehicle and anything else needed.
What is the Driver Consent form?
The form is for named drivers who cannot be with you when you apply. You must name all potential drivers, including yourself, on the application form. All those nominated must sign to say they understand the Scheme and will abide by the rules. Take a signed and completed Driver Consent form for each person, as well as their driving licence.
What is a Safe Date?
The DWP will give Motability Operations a Safe Date, which is when your eligible allowance will be held from. This becomes the Earliest Handover Date – your Motability agreement must start after this day and you cannot collect the car any earlier.
Can I change my mind after I make an application?
If you change your mind, contact the dealership as soon as possible. They may be able to cancel your application for a fee – bear in mind this may not be an option.
How long will it take to get my new car?
There is no set time-frame: the manufacturer, make and model, and adaptations needed can all affect the wait. It is best to check in with your dealership to find out how long the process will take. Customers who are already on the Scheme cannot collect another Motability car until their current lease is over.
What do I need to have with me to collect my car?
Please ensure that you have your proof of identity, all driving licences for active drivers, and your PIN.
I have lost my PIN, can I get another one?
If it will be over two weeks until your car is ready, call Motability Customer Services on 0300 456 4566.
If there are less than two weeks to go, your best course of action is to contact the dealership.
Can I collect my Motability car at the weekend?
Most dealers will agree to this, as long as you have your PIN and/or other security information. Some dealerships may not schedule handovers on weekends.
Can someone else take delivery on my behalf?
Only an appointee (carer) is allowed to take delivery or collect for you. As a Motability agreement is legally binding, it is always best for you to enter your PIN and collect the car in person.
Can I get a caravan or motor home?
No, neither of those options are available on the Motability Scheme.
