2016's World Car of the Year is the stunning Mazda MX-5

Continuing the success story that has lasted for more than 25 years, the Mazda MX-5 shines in 2016 as the World Car of the Year (WCOTY).

It was announced as the winner during the New York Motor Show in 2016. The MX-5 has also been given the World Car Design of the Year award. This win puts the total number of awards for the car at over 30.

The WCOTY prize has been awarded annually since 2004, judged by international motoring journalists. This year, 73 judges from 23 countries were invited to give their opinions. They gave the Mazda MX-5 a total score of 764, putting it six points clear of its nearest rival.

For the design award, the Mazda CX-3 was also a top three finalist. All cars shortlisted for the main WCOTY award are eligible for the design category.

The car currently in Mazda showrooms is the fourth generation of the iconic roadster. Nearly one million models have been sold since the confident, stylish MX-5 debuted in 1989. At the turn of the 21st century, it was officially recognised with a Guinness World Record as the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car of all time.

Mazda used the New York show to promote the newest addition to the range, the MX-5 RF. It has the same sleek convertible style as the current MX-5, with a hard roof instead of a soft top. The award and the new-car reveal put Mazda firmly in the spotlight for the entirety of the event.
